Information

Having undertaken a feasibility study into construction logistics at Heathrow Airport, Mace were commissioned as project and supply chain managers to set up and in conjunction with a second tier partner to operate the construction Consolidation Centre (CC).

Based adjacent to the airport, the CC consists of a 20,000ft² building with external storage areas nearby. The purpose of the CC was to accept deliveries of construction materials for projects at Heathrow consolidate those materials into work packs based upon trade contractor’s needs distribute those materials not only to site, but also direct to the work face on a just-in-time basis.

The CC was not a warehouse – typically materials would not be held there for more than seven days. The CC aim was to facilitate the safe, efficient and sustainable flow of materials from the numerous supply chains to the actual point of use. The main benefits of the CC were:

  • increased plan reliability on projects of up to 5%.
  • net cost savings on project package costs of 1.9%.
  • local carbon dioxide emissions from vehicles reduced by 42%.

Rather than becoming heavily involved in moving materials to the work face, trade contractors are were then able to concentrate on their core production skills.
The concept and reliance of the CC was the first stage prior to its close and move to the larger BAA operation at Colnbrook involving Terminal 5 and other BAA work and operations by BAA.
