At Mace Plus safety is a MUST

05/10/2009

In mid 2008, the Mace Plus board challenged senior managers to improve the company's safety protocol and a little over a year on, MUST cards and an associated training initiative have been introduced with impressive results.

A task group comprising six project-based team members was established with a remit to prepare a proposal for improving safety. The group came up with areas for improvement identified through business review meetings, feedback sessions and SHEOnline. It was decided that all actions should be simple, consistent and achievable, providing all Mace Plus employees with clear direction, means of measuring success and ownership. With backing from the board, the team introduced mandatory on-site workshops for all Mace Plus employees.

The workshops focus on:

  • Behaviours
  • Practical application
  • Training
  • Communication

A tailored programme has been introduced alongside the Mace Plus Universal Safety Training (MUST) card system which enables central management of the scheme and identifies each employee's training requirements according to their role. Each staff member has been issued a MUST card that reflects the training matrix and includes a deadline for each training unit to be delivered.

The team has successfully delivered in excess of 400 training days to employees over the six months to September 2009.
