Como canteen cooks up £17,000 for children’s cancer charity

17/06/2011

The Como team delivering the Drapers Garden project for client BlackRock Investment, has hosted a fundraising dinner on site and raised more than £17,000 for children’s cancer charity, CLIC Sargent.

The idea for the event came from Como project director, David Howell, and Graham Jones of site catering contractor, Canteen Projects. Several members of the Drapers Garden team did their bit to ensure the event went off without a hitch. Site office manager Valli Gregory was in charge of organising the event while three project members – Sem Kyegombe, Gary Egan and Brian Donnachie – were persuaded to masquerade as ‘celebrity chefs’ with project director David Howell.

Guests were welcomed by master of ceremonies, Como M&E manager, Graham Drummond, before being treated to a three-course menu prepared by Canteen Projects and plated up by the Como celebrity chefs. Looking the part in their uniforms, the chefs served smoked mackerel pate as a starter, pepper beef fillet and Scottish salmon for the main course, and chocolate cheesecake for dessert.

The money was raised by selling tables at the event for £150 and encouraging guests to enter a raffle, and bid for auction items, with prizes donated by subcontractors. The most popular auction item was a day ‘back on the tools’ for project director David Howell which, alone, raised more than £1,500.

The event was well supported with more than 100 people attending including subcontractors, the professional team and the client. Ceris Bradley of CLIC Sargent also attended and gave a speech describing the charity’s work.

Project director David Howell, said: “The fundraising dinner was a great success and we are delighted to be able to support such a worthwhile cause. Thanks must go to Valli and the rest of the Como team for organising it, to the subcontractors for donating the prizes, and of course to the guests who not only attended, but also bid so enthusiastically and helped us raise such an impressive sum of money for CLIC Sargent.”
