In 2008 Mace were appointed as project manager to Smarte East, a regional collaborative framework developed by Essex, Hertfordshire and Suffolk County Councils in order to deliver better buildings across the councils' property portfolios.

The framework's objectives are to deliver £120m of construction spend over a four year period, develop reduction in costs and improve working practices, and to develop the capability of clients and constructors through collaborative working practices. Mace Group's extensive public sector experience made us the perfect partner for this commission and our teams know how to leverage the best of commercial experience to deliver public sector outcomes.

Smarte East currently has procured a framework of seven contractors with Mace acting as project manager. Procurement of design services is taking place in 2009.

Smarte East delivers projects in a transparent, collaborative and mutually beneficial manner with considered risk sharing and key performance indicators to track and encourage improvements in performance. The NEC form of contract and target costing are the preferred delivery mechanism.
