Residentially reborn

Mace Plus delivered the refurbishment of the Grade II listed Giles Gilbert Scott Building, comprising 100 high quality apartments for client Westcity Properties in 2007.

The original building was designed by architect Sir Giles Gilbert Scott in 1928 for Whitelands College, and remains a Grade II listed building. The 19 month construction programme was split into three phases each of which was handed over to client Westcity Properties on time with the final phase completed for handover three weeks early. The £19m refurbishment project was undertaken by Mace Plus under a fixed price contract.

The Mace Plus project team faced construction challenges as a result of a new design being fitted into an existing building but overcame them with careful planning and innovative thinking. There were numerous conditions to be discharged based on the buildings listed status and traditional/unusual materials had to be sourced in order to retain the intent of the original design.

Giles Gilbert Scott was the second development undertaken by the Mace Group for developer Westcity Properties after The Phillimores was completed in Kensington. Although destined for a different market than the Phillimores, the construction of the apartments at The Gilbert Scott Building shared similar challenges. Both involved fitting a new design into an existing building, numerous planning conditions to discharge based on the listed status, and the sourcing of traditional or unusual materials deemed necessary by the planners to retain to preserve the original design intent.

The end result is a luxurious residential blend of tradition and modernity.
