Information
Under the patronage of His Excellency Sheikh Nahyan Al Nahyan, Abu Dhabi Cricket Council was granted funds to develop a stadium capable of staging interna-tional cricket events.
A 140m long crescent roof that soars 65m above the cricket ground covers 9,000 of the 22,000 seats in the stadium. This cantilevered roof, which is the largest in the Middle East, is made of 9,000 tonnes of steel and clad on the bottom as well as the top. It is shaped like the peak of a cricket cap and supported at the centre by three 45m towers symbolising cricket stumps.
The lights for the stadium are placed on four towers each 70m high. Each of these four towers contains 60 lights.
The stadium also includes conference facilities, VIP stadium boxes, bespoke broad-casting facilities to provide televised coverage, changing rooms, kitchen and restau-rant areas and a separate circular clubhouse which incorporates a gymnasium, two squash courts and can accommodate up to 400 spectators.
The ground opened in May 2004.
