Plaza Mayor is an innovative shopping and leisure destination outside Malaga in Spain. The centre brings together cinemas, sports, bowling, children's entertainment, restaurants, bars, esplanades and shops. Mace's client, Sonae Sierra, is a major Portuguese retail developer.

Inspired by the region's traditional architecture, the Plaza Mayor recreates a typical Andaluzian town with streets, squares, gardens and fountains. To complement the shopping options the client also required a 20,000 sq m green area which included many plants, trees and other vegetation. The client Sonae Sierra operates stringent environmental management standards and Plaza Mayor was planned and delivered with attention focused on construction materials, efficient energy recovery, water and effluent treatment, recycling bins, and other facets.

The €58 million project was the first leisure centre in Andaluzia with a gross lettable area of over 18,000m2.

Mace has just delivered the second phase extension of the centre, providing project and construction management services on the delivery of an additional 45,000m2 of floor space. This project was completed in September 2008.
