Information

Mace constructed phase 1 of a new data centre with associated support facilities for Nationwide Building Society in southern England.

The brown field development site of nine acres comprises of the construction of a new 2,000 square metre single storey data hall, 1,600 square metres of operating plant space with additional plant enclosures located externally and a 1,400 square metre administrative area, consisting of mission critical back up / meeting room space, circulation areas, store area, welfare and kitchen facilities.

Groundworks commenced in April 2009 with the piling mat, piling and foundations followed by steelwork erection in July, envelope in the shape of roofing and cladding panels was underway in August and September respectively with the building being fully watertight by November 2009.

The fit out comprised four DRUPS rooms containing four 1,600kW diesel rotary, uninterruptable power supplies, diverse HV supplied via two utilities substations incorporated with in the framework of the data centre, 24 CRACS located in the corridors adjacent to the data hall on the east and west elevations supplied by flow and return chilled water from 12 chillers located externally on the flanks of the building.

The project required extensive removal and relocation of various species of natural wildlife as well as substantial ground investigation and re-grading works prior to piling and ground works being able to commence. On completion the surrounding areas have been substantially landscaped and mature trees and shrubbery installed in order to enhance the environmental design and construction of the building

Mace was appointed by Nationwide in a number of different capacities for the delivery of the data centre project:
