Thank you to the Design Team and everyone at Mace from me and my section for the fantastic office we have moved into. Everyone involved definitely turned a sow's ear into a silk purse... the layout of the office works really well, very spacious.

Information

Mace has been appointed to deliver concept space planning and office design, detailed design, CA role and assistance with programme management and procurement on selected projects in accordance with LBI SMART working requirements to programme and budget.

The SMART programme is self funding through disposals and reorganisation of office space and departments with an overall value of £12.9m saving £29.1m. The programme is completed in June 2009.

Mace is part of a multi-provider framework for the supply of SMART office design for a programme of works for the London Borough of Islington. The programme of works, part of Islington's SMART working initiative is based on shared working principles, sometimes referred to as 'new ways of working', and widely employed in the private sector. The overall objective is to move from the traditional one person to workstation to a ratio of 4/3 thereby reducing the overall footprint required for the office portfolio and providing opportunities for a disposal programme of inefficient buildings. The SMART working office initiative is also designed to give the staff the right tools to do the job, especially in terms of technology, and ultimately provide an environment that will maximise the efficiency of space and allow staff to effectively deliver core services to the residents of the London Borough of Islington.

We were appointed to deliver the space planning and office design for phase 2 of the SMART working programme which includes the disposal of several existing buildings and relocating services into more suitable areas.

One of the key challenges was to ensure that all staff are allocated suitable and sufficient space to carry out their services, including breakout areas, quiet areas and shared meeting rooms. All new offices are open plan and designed to be flexible. A clear desk policy has been introduced to ensure that no workstation is allocated to a particular user. This requires careful coordination of ICT requirements and as part of our assignment we coordinated the works with the relevant consultants.

Also as part of our appointment we were commissioned to develop the Interior Design Guidelines for LBI which are now an integral part of the Islington Branding handbook.
