Information
Mace was appointed to project manage a new international pool in Corby, East Midlands. The pool is part of the parkland gateway regeneration scheme for Corby town centre and is listed as a training pool for athletes training for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games and as a regional competition facility.
Mace as project manager and employers agent has been involved in the feasibility, development and construction phase of the project. The 50m international pool facility is equipped with moveable floors and booms to provide a flexible space capable of holding international junior diving events and short and long course races. The iconic 80 metre arched designed roof includes glulam timber beams and a 196 seat spectator gallery. The facility also includes a 20 metre training pool, fun pool with flume, a 70 station modern gym, dance facilities, a health suite, café and seating area, offices and meeting rooms.
The building has been designed to be sustainable and will gain the BREEAM very good standard. The pool will also be one of the safest in the country, incorporating a state of the art drowning detection system that will sound an alarm if a swimmer is below the surface of the water too long. Particular challenges posed by the project include the need to keep the existing pool operational throughout construction and the close proximity of ancient woodlands.
