A capital development

Mace's construction management commission on the acclaimed GLA building allowed us to bring our efficiency and innovation to every aspect of this challenging project on London's South Bank.

Mace's role as construction manager on the £54m City Hall project (designed by Sir Norman Foster) included all shell-and-core work on the structure itself together with associated infrastructure work across the entire More London site.

City Hall, the centrepiece of the More London site, is a unique and unusual building. Nothing quite like this structure had been constructed before and its challenging shape demanded innovative solutions at every level. City Hall is also one of the most energy efficient and sustainable structures in the capital due to natural solar-shading realised via the inclination of the south face of the structure; the use of artesian well-water pumped from 65m below the surface to provide all building air conditioning; the subsequent use of artesian well-water for toilets and other non-potable uses within the building; energy efficient cladding panels; and the use of recycled building materials.

Mace was appointed by More London in 1999 and was responsible for managing the programme of work on this project during the intervening period, including the project and construction management of City Hall and a number of other plots on the site.

Mace was also responsible for construction logistics and for ensuring that the method of construction delivery optimised both the value and efficiency of the development.

Mace produced a comprehensive programming strategy for the whole More London development, including risk analysis, logistics phasing, cash flow revenue planning and letting strategy.

After the successful completion of the GLA building, client More London Developments appointed Mace to deliver a further four plots with the final plot currently under construction and due for completion in 2009

Mace also used the More London development to spearhead its social inclusion programme. To date Mace has enabled over a thousand people from disadvantaged backgrounds into full-time employment in the construction sector.
