Transforming New Street
Mace has been appointed as delivery partner for the £600m Birmingham Gateway project that will transform the city's New Street station and environs. Following a successful initial phase, Network Rail has additionally appointed Mace as principal contractor.
Birmingham New Street station is uniquely positioned in the heart of the city and approximately 60% of the trains travelling between London and the North of England pass through it. it is one of the last major railway stations in the UK to be developed and the need to improve all aspects of the station is critical to both Network Rail and the West Midlands region as a whole.
Developed by Network Rail, Advantage West Midlands, Birmingham City Council and Centro (The West Midlands Passenger Transport Executive), the Birmingham Gateway scheme will see the current 1960s station transformed into a modern 21st Century transport hub for the region.
The development incorporates the full refurbishment of the existing station including retail areas and the construction of two 30-storey mixed-use towers on the south side, designed to stimulate economic development and continue the regeneration of what is currently a deprived area of the city centre.
As delivery partner, Mace is part of an integrated project team (IPT) incorporating the lead designer Atkins, concept architect Foreign Office Architects and Network Rail. Key to the appointment was the way in which Mace personnel will integrate with the IPT and develop the strong relationships that will underpin successful delivery of the project.
With all works to be undertaken while the station remains fully operational, Mace will also assist in logistics management in terms of track possessions, night working and temporary hoardings to minimise disruption to the travelling public. The preconstruction team will undertake significant planning work to ensure this is achieved.
A comprehensive deliverability report was submitted as part of the tender process and demonstrated a thorough understanding of the proposed scheme and how the team would manage site constraints, buildability issues, phasing and logistics.
The IPT has started work by developing a 100-day plan to schedule the activities and resources required to achieve the key project milestones. Completion is scheduled for 2014.
