Mace helps extend Edinburgh International Conference Centre

10/07/2009
Mace Group has secured an extension to its existing project management appointment to provide consultancy services in advance of a single-stage design and build tender for client Edinburgh International Conference Centre (EICC) Ltd.
EICC has submitted a detailed planning application for an £85m extension to the Edinburgh International Conference Centre, due to be issued in late 2009.. The key feature of the new extended facility will be the 17,000 square foot multi-purpose hall with a bespoke automated moving floor system, located underground the building.
The project will also include key links through to the existing building, associated breakout space, catering facilities and a new glazed atrium building offering direct access to the new multi-purpose hall from street level. An eight-storey Grade A office building of approximately 188,000 square foot plus associated ground level retail units will also be developed at the site. The development is considered to be the final piece of the jigsaw in completing Edinburgh's exchange district.
The client has stipulated that the existing conference centre must remain fully operational throughout the construction period, with a target delivery date of early 2013.
The EICC is acknowledged as one of the world’s outstanding venues for conferences, conventions and exhibitions. Since opening in 1995, more than 700,000 delegates have been welcomed at more than 2,000 events, generating in excess of £233m to the local economy. If the plans are given the green light, the expanded EICC will assert its position as one of the foremost conference venues, with capacity to attract more than 95,000 delegates a year.
