Mace helps deliver Olympic sized pool to the East Midlands

08/09/2009

Mace Group and client Corby Borough Council have celebrated the opening of a new international pool, a project Mace has been involved in as project manager and employers agent since 2005. The opening ceremony for the region's first 50m public pool was held on 24th July and was attended by 400 guests including Olympic swimmer Mark Foster who officially opened and tested the pool, setting the first 50m timed swim at 22.92 seconds. Other guests included Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, Ben Bradshaw and Corby MP, Phil Hope.

Corby East Midlands International Pool is part of the Parkland Gateway regeneration scheme for the town centre and is included in both the London 2012's Olympic and Paralympic Pre-Games Training Camp Guides and is also planned to be used as a regional competition facility.

The building has an iconic and sustainable design to a BREEAM very good standard. A unique feature of the project is the glittering entrance created by artwork covering 150 sqm of the building and composed of 500 panels made of bespoke mix of polyester glitter illuminated by a series of LED lights designed specifically for this project. The LED's are able to create bright light whilst using very little energy (less than a domestic kettle) and are designed to give the appearance of light shimmering on water by day and water pulsing across the front of the building by night.

Mace regional director Simon Dale was present at the opening ceremony and said: "Mace is proud to be part of the team to deliver this iconic new leisure centre to the people of Corby. The project has been a real team effort and we look forward to any further involvement in the regeneration of Corby and the region as a whole."

Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, Ben Bradshaw said:"The pool will be a huge asset, not just for the Corby or Northamptonshire, but for the whole of the East Midlands. Corby deserves great credit for its initiative and enterprise in driving forward this project, which will leave the town with an enviable new sports facility fit for Olympic hopefuls and young families alike."

Leader of Corby Borough Council, Cllr Pat Fawcett said: "We would like to thank everyone who has worked tirelessly on this project to complete our state of the art pool to the highest standard whilst keeping it on time and on budget -  remarkable achievement and the results speak for themselves."
