Mace help engage the community in Birmingham Eastside

31/07/2007

Mace, as joint venture project manager on the Ventureast regeneration project in the Eastside of Birmingham organised the unveiling of artwork produced by 120 local school children as part of a community engagement initiative for the area. The panels were unveiled by the Lord Mayor on 10th July and were based on themes associated with Eastside: learning, leisure and living.

The new learning technology and heritage quarter in the Eastside of Birmingham is the largest regeneration project for the city comprising 170 hectares, representing £6 billion worth of investment and making a difference to the currently neglected areas of the city. The Eastside area is divided into several lots with Mace working with Advantage West Midlands and Birmingham City Council on the £500m Ventureast and learning and leisure quarter lots.

Work on site began with the school children visiting the Eastside team offices. During these sessions the children worked with Mace, the masterplanners, the developers and local artist Paula Woof to create the large panels. Donna Heath, Mace project manager in charge of the concept and delivery says: “The event, aimed at local 10 and 11 year olds, provided a fantastic opportunity to educate them about the meaning of regeneration, as well as gain a deeper understanding of the needs and aspirations of the local community by engaging with the generation who in 2018, the date for the completion of the development, will live and work in what we have created”.

The designs by the school children mark the first phase of Ventureast and as future sites are prepared, the Eastside team will continue to work with local schools to build links with young people and to provide further such opportunities.
